Areas of Research

Ann L. Lee is Vice President for Process Development. In this role, she is responsible for the development, implementation and support of clinical and commercial production processes and technologies. Lee leads cell culture, purification, formulation, devices, packaging, analytical development, project management and pilot plant operations teams.

Lee joined Genentech in 2005. Prior to Genentech, Lee was employed by Merck & Co., Inc., for 16 years, where she held several leadership positions in vaccine development in the Merck Research Laboratories, and then served as Vice President, Chemical Technology and Engineering responsible for global chemical technical support and process engineering in the manufacturing division. During her tenure at Merck, she contributed to the development of a number of vaccines including Liquid PedvaxHIB®, COMVAX®, PNEUMOVAX®23, GARDASIL®, as well as clinical candidates and drug products.

Lee is an author on more than 35 scientific articles and an inventor on three issued patents and numerous patent applications. She is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and serves on several academic and scientific advisory boards. She is Associate Editor of Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry.

Lee holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and Master of Science, Master of Philosophy and doctorate degrees in biochemical engineering from Yale University.
