Task Force Outlines Five Grand Challenges in Biomedical Engineering

03/15/2024

A new roadmap outlines five transformative biomedical engineering research areas that will likely transform the practice of medicine, and engineering and medical education, over the next decade. The advances: personalized physiology avatars; on-demand tissue and organ engineering; advanced brain interface systems powered by AI; immune system engineering; and the design and engineering of genomes. The roadmap is the work of a 50-person task force from 34 elite universities and includes two Yale Biomedical Engineering faculty, James Duncan and Jay Humphrey.

The study, "Grand Challenges at the Interface of Engineering and Medicine," was published in the latest issue of IEEE Open Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology and is backed by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society.
