Non-degree Program
The Division of Special Registration (DSR) allows students to take graduate courses or to do research without enrolling in a graduate degree program. Admission requirements are the same as for the regular degree programs. Please view available courses and descriptions here.
Special Students
An individual may take individual courses for credit as a Special Student. If a Special Student is later admitted into a graduate degree program, he or she may receive tuition credit for work done while in the DSR program.
Participation in the DSR program does not automatically qualify a student for the graduate degree program.
Whether taking the course for credit or auditing, Special Students are charged tuition per course. For the 2008-09 academic year, tuition is $3,938 per course. There is no financial assistance for Special Students.
Visiting Assistants in Research
A student who is a Ph.D. candidate at another university may wish to do research under the supervision of a Yale faculty member. If a Yale faculty member is willing to accept and support him or her, and if the Director of Graduate Studies and the appropriate Associate Dean of the Graduate School accept the student's proposal, the student will be appointed a Visiting Assistant in Research.
In 2007-08, the fee per term for a Visiting Assistant in Research was $1,912 and the fee for summer 2008 was $956.
